Perfect Dark

Creator(s): Rare | Release: 2000

Perfect Dark is an FPS developed by Rare for the Nintendo 64.

Perfect Dark runs on an upgraded version of the game engine from GoldenEye 007; requiring an Expansion Pak for the Nintendo 64 to access additional features including the campaign mode.

Notable Design Implementations

  • The campaign can be played on 3 different difficulties: Agent, Special Agent, and Perfect Agent. Each difficulty not only makes enemies stronger but also adds additional objectives.

  • Actions taken in a previous level will influence the next level.

    • In the level “Chicago: Stealth” on Special Agent or Perfect Agent, one of the objectives is to prepare an escape route by attaching a Remote Mine to a blocked door. The player can choose to place the mine either on the blocked door of the 1st level, 2nd level, or 3rd level. Depending on which the player chooses will determine which floor the player will need to escape on in the next level “G5 Building: Reconnaissance”.

    • In the level “Air Base: Espionage” there are 2 ways to finish the level. One way is through a maintenance ladder at the bottom of the plane while the other way will be through the side of the plane. Depending on which way the player enters Air Force One will determine the player starting position on the next level “Air Force One: Antiterrorism”.

    • In the level “Air Force One: Antiterrorism”, once the player obtains the keycard, the player can lower a hoverbike out of the plane. This will allow the player to use the hoverbike in the next level “Crash Site: Confrontation”.

  • Each weapon contains a secondary function.

  • Besides the campaign and multiplayer, the player can explore the Carrington Institute to learn more about the lore as well as participate in the shooting range.

A remaster Perfect Dark was released in 2010 and published by Microsoft for the Xbox 360. It features significant technical improvements over the original, including new higher-resolution textures and character models as well as a higher frame rate. It also updates the control schemes to more closely resemble modern FPS controls.

A prequel Perfect Dark Zero was released in 2005 for the Xbox 360. It is widely considered to be an inferior game to Perfect Dark.

  • The alien species featured in Perfect Dark are the Maian and the Skedar.

    • Elvis is the name of the Maian that assists Joanna throughout the campaign.

    • Mr. Blonde is the name given to Skedar Warriors that are disguising themselves as humans.

    Easter Egg(s)

    • A single piece of Swiss cheese can be found on each level as a hidden easter egg.

    • Classic Weapons can be unlocked which are duplicates of weapons from Goldeneye 007 and include: PP9i CC13, KLO1313, KF7 Special, ZZT (9mm), DMC, AR53, and RC-P45
