Fantasia 2000 (2000)

The film begins with the sound of a modern symphony orchestra tuning and Deems Taylor's introduction from Fantasia. Panels showing various segments from Fantasia fly in outer space and form the set and stage for a 100-person modern symphony orchestra. 100 Musicians take their seats and tune up as 22 animators and 22 artists draw at their desks before James Levine approaches the conductor's podium and signals the beginning of the first piece.


Symphony No. 5 in C minor - I. Allegro con brio by Ludwig van Beethoven

Features abstract patterns resembling butterflies and bats as they explore a world of light and darkness which is conquered by light at last.

Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi

This segment features a family of frolicking humpback whales that are able to fly due to a supernova. At one point, the whale calf is separated from his parents when he's trapped in an iceberg, later finding his way out with his mother's help.

Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin

An episode of 1930s-era New York City, depicting the day in the lives of several people within the Depression-era bustling metropolis, as scenes drawn in the style of Al Hirschfeld's famous cartoons of the era.

A flock of flamingos try to force a slapstick member who enjoys playing with a yo-yo to engage in their "dull" routines.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Paul Dukas

Based on Goethe's 1797 poem Der Zauberlehrling. Mickey Mouse, the young apprentice of the sorcerer Yen Sid, attempts some of his master's magic to animate a broomstick to do his chores however he does not know how to control the magic. This segment was in the original Fantasia.

Pomp and Circumstance - Marches 1, 2, 3 and 4 by Edward Elgar

A pastiche of the story of Noah's Ark, with Donald Duck as first mate to Noah. Donald musters the animals to the Ark, and misses, loses, and is reunited with Daisy Duck in the process.

Firebird Suite - 1919 Version by Igor Stravinsky

The story of a Spring Sprite and her companion Elk. After a long winter she restores the life to the forest but accidentally awakens the fiery spirit of destruction (Firebird) in a nearby volcano. The Firebird proceeds in destroying the forest and seemingly the sprite. She is restored to life however after the destruction and the forest life is reborn with her after some encouraging from the Elk. The story is considered an exercise in the theme of Life-Death-Rebirth entities.


TRIVIA

In 1940 there was a book called Future Fantasias which proposed many new sequences for Fantasia. Work began on a new version of Fantasia called Musicana in the 1970s which would feature different countries and their musicians. This work was primarily done by Mel Shaw who helped develop ideas and his art style heavily featured pastels.
